NOUVELLES DU PNHE

1. RENOUVELLEMENT DE LA DIRECTION DU PNHE

Le conseil scientifique renouvelé en 2016 est maintenant bien en place. Guillaume Dubus a demandé à quitter la fonction de direction du PNHE, qu'il occupait depuis cinq ans, et le conseil scientifique. Il est remplacé au 1er juillet par Susanna Vergani à la direction du PNHE. Régis Terrier reste président du conseil scientifique. Susanna et Régis seront donc vos interlocuteurs privilégiés dans les prochaines années.


2. JOURNEES THEORIE DU PNHE (IAP, 1-2 octobre)

Pour rappel, le PNHE organise des journées “théorie” à l'IAP début octobre. Le programme est largement ouvert à vos contributions: inscrivez-vous !

L'astrophysique des hautes énergies est rythmée par les grands projets instrumentaux mais également par l'évolution de notre compréhension théorique des phénomènes et notre capacité à les modéliser. L'objectif de ces journées est de mettre en lumière les travaux menés en France en théorie et en modélisation autour des thématiques PNHE.

Vous êtes plutôt théoricien ou modélisateur : Quels sont les problèmes que vous abordez ? Quelle est votre approche ? Qu'attendez-vous des observations?

Vous êtes plutôt observateur ou instrumentaliste : venez comprendre ce qui motive les théoriciens et leur poser toutes les questions qui vous démangent !

L'objectif est de partager nos expertises et de susciter de nouvelles collaborations. Ces journées font écho au colloque organisé par le PNHE en 2014 autour de la participation française aux "grands instruments" de notre discipline.

Du 25 juin au 20 juillet se tient à Orsay le workshop PSI2 sur le moteur central des sursauts gamma et des supernovae gravitationnelles, organisé par Jérôme Guilet, Robert Mochkovitch et Thierry Foglizzo.

2. HIGHLIGHTS AND PROSPECTS FOR NUMERICAL ASTROPHYSICS IN FRANCE (Lyon, 8-11 octobre)

This is the 2nd announcement for registration and abstract submission to the workshop "Highlights and prospects for numerical astrophysics in France”, which will be held in Lyon from Oct. 8 to Oct. 11, 2018.

Rationale:

High Performance Computing (HPC) has become an essential tool of all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. In particular, numerical simulations have become the tool of choice to carry out quantitative theoretical investigations, which take into acount the full complexity of astrophysical objects and their contexts, and reach a level of precision which matches the ever more demanding level of detail achieved with observations. Today, numerical simulations of astrophysical objects have become the principal vector of the dialog between observations and theory, and they have reached a quality which allows us to use them for a direct interpretation of observations (from large-scale cosmological surveys to observations of atmospheric phenomena on the surface of giant planets).

As observations, simulations require high-performance instruments: super-computers. In less than 10 years, there has been a spectacular increase of the gigantic computing power that is now available to researchers, both at the national (through GENCI) and european levels (trough PRACE). This is accompanied by profound evolutions of the methods used by specialists of numerical simulations. More and more research projects are now performed in close collaborations with software engineers. With exascale computers coming soon, such a professionalism of high performance computing (HPC) is expected to become more and more frequent. Like the other communities in France, astrophysicists must prepare for that transition.

The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers working in France in all fields of numerical astrophysics, along with representatives of the HPC infrastructure at the regional, national, and European level, and key players in the forthcoming ExaScale HPC. Invited presentations from astronomers will both highlight astrophysical results and propose a reflexion on the evolutions of their work. Other invited presentations will present the expected evolution of the HPC landscape in France and Europe, both in terms of organisation and of technologies. A large number of contributed talks will complement the program.

3. FUNDAMENTAL PHYSICS WITH LISA (Florence, Italie, 12-14 novembre)

We announce the Fundamental Physics with LISA workshop which will take place on November 12-14, 2018 at the Galileo Galilei Institute (Arcetri, Florence, IT). Its goal will be to discuss ways in which we can test General Relativity and learn about fundamental theoretical physics with future LISA observations.

In order to encourage interaction and discussion, the workshop will bring together experts in theory, phenomenology, modeling and data analysis, and will have an unusual format. Each day will be centered around one of these facets, and consist of three topical sessions in which discussions will be moderated by a panel of three or four experts. The goal of the workshop is to foster fruitful interactions between different dimensions of LISA science. This will include the following topics:

* Model independent tests versus Model-Specific tests of GR.
* Tests of GR and inferences about physics from the inspiral of
supermassive black holes.
* Tests of GR and inferences about physics from the ringdown of
supermassive black hole merger.
* Tests of GR and inferences about physics from extreme mass-ratio inspirals.
* Inferences about the nature of supermassive black holes.
* Tests of superradiance and inferences about ultralight boson fields
and fuzzy dark matter.
* Exotic compact objects, tests of the horizon, and GW echoes.
* Environmental effects

The gamma-ray astronomy group in the Erlangen Center for Astroparticle Physics (ECAP) at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg is seeking outstanding individuals for one or more

Postdoctoral researcher positions (f/m)

to contribute to the analysis of current gamma-ray telescope data (H.E.S.S.-II, Fermi-LAT) and to the development of the Cherenkov Telescope array (CTA). The successful candidates are expected to cover research areas such as:

- Development and evaluation of camera electronics for CTA (FlashCam, CHEC) - Data analysis and simulations for CTA (ctapipe, fermipy, gammapy, ctools)
- Improvements to the analysis of H.E.S.S. Phase-II data (deep learning)
- Multi-messenger observations of high-energy sources

ECAP offers a strong environment in the field of astroparticle physics. Research in the institute includes (but is not limited to) involvement in the Fermi-LAT, H.E.S.S., CTA, eROSITA, ANTARES, IceCube and KM3NeT.

Successful applicants should have or be in the process of completing a PhD degree in Astrophysics or Physics or related disciplines. They should have a research background and provide evidence of outstanding potential. Relevant experience in hardware and software development and ability to work in a team is seen as beneficial. Guiding and advising students in their PhD, Master's and Bachelor's theses is expected. Involvement in teaching at a level of 5 hours/week during lecture periods is obligatory.

The full-time positions are available from 1 September 2018. The initial contract will be for 3 years, with an option of an extension by a maximum of further 3 years. The contract will be in salary grade E13/A13. Application deadline is 1 August 2018. Later applications may be considered until the position is filled.
